Re: McNair Graduate Assistantships for an academic
year
New Mexico State University has a highly successful Ronald E. McNair Program. Since the Program was established in 1992, over 200 students have benefited tremendously from the range of services that are provided by staff of the Center for
Academic Success, faculty and professional staff of NMSU. We as an institution have benefited as well. One of our former McNair students is now an assistant professor in the College of Education.
The average McNair student has a GPA of 3.5, is engaged in research, and receives training on how to take the GRE. Most students are the first generation to attend college. Many are non-traditional students who are returning to college while raising families. About 70 percent of McNair fellows pursue graduate degrees including doctoral degrees.
The Graduate School wishes to support and recognize the success of our McNair program on campus. We will offer several McNair Graduate Assistantships for one academic year with a match of one year from a department. The selected student must be an admitted student.
The criteria for selection are provided below.
- The student must have successfully completed a McNair program as an undergraduate student either on campus or at another university;
- He/she has an undergraduate GPA of at least a 3.3, and
- The department has agreed to provided a one year match for one additional year
Nominations should include a supportive letter from faculty and a copy of the student’s transcript. Please submit nominations by April 1st. We hope this award will help you recruit high quality students into your programs. Please let
us know if you have any questions.
